Why can't we mix grace and works in salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Grace and works cannot mix because they are fundamentally opposed; salvation is solely a gift from God.

The sermon outlines that grace is the unearned gift from God, while works imply earning or deserving salvation, which contradicts the very nature of grace. Romans 11:6 states that if salvation is by grace, it is no longer based on works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace. In the context of the parable of the new wine, trying to combine the two results in destruction for both. Believers are encouraged to rest in the finished work of Christ and reject any notion that they can contribute to their salvation through works, which ultimately leads to self-righteousness and boasting.
