Why did Jesus need to be our substitute?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus needed to be our substitute to fully satisfy God's justice for sin and enable our salvation.

Jesus served as our substitute to fulfill the righteous requirements of God's law which demand a penalty for sin. This principle is essential in the context of divine justice—God must punish sin to remain just (Romans 3:26). In this regard, Colossians 2:14 explains that Christ 'canceled the record of debt that stood against us.' Thus, Jesus' substitutionary death was necessary to vindicate God's justice while providing mercy to the sinner. Without His sacrifice, humanity would remain under the just condemnation of sin. His perfect obedience and sacrificial death made it possible for believers to receive forgiveness and be counted righteous before God.
