Why do Christians believe in the need for a mediator?

The need for a mediator arises from the recognition of humanity's sinful condition. Sin creates a separation between God and man, necessitating a go-between who can mediate on our behalf. As stated in Galatians 3:13, Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by being made a curse for us. Only through Jesus, as the perfect mediator, can sinners be reconciled to God.
