Why do Old Testament sacrifices not put away sin?

Answered in 1 source

Old Testament sacrifices were mere symbols pointing to Christ and could not genuinely put away sin; only Christ’s sacrifice achieves this.

The Old Testament sacrificial system, although instituted by God, was ultimately insufficient in erasing sin. Hebrews 10:4 states that it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. These rituals served as types and shadows meant to prepare Israel for the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, the Lamb of God. Christ's death fulfills the sacrificial system's requirements and renders the previous offerings obsolete, for He is the only one capable of truly putting away sin.
