Why do people question God's existence?

Answered in 1 source

People may question God's existence due to suffering, doubt, or a misunderstanding of His sovereignty and presence (Psalm 42:3).

Throughout history, skeptics and doubters have raised the question of God's existence, often during times of suffering or personal loss. In Psalm 42:3, David expresses his anguish, indicating how the world can be quick to question, 'Where is your God?' This reflects the common sentiment that emerges during trials, where individuals may feel abandoned or confused about God's purpose.

Moreover, the culture of skepticism and secularism can exacerbate these questions. Modern influences sometimes lead people to view God as distant or unresponsive to human suffering. However, as Christians, it is vital to understand that God is sovereign and His ways are not always transparent to us. Contrary to popular belief, our trials and hardships do not negate God’s presence or power; instead, they can serve as a means through which God reveals His faithfulness. The faithful should engage with these doubts by turning to Scripture, which offers assurance of God's unfailing presence and ultimate purpose in all circumstances, thus providing answers to both their own hearts and the hearts of others.
