Why do people reject Christ despite knowing they are sinners?

According to Scripture, the human condition is marked by a rebellion against God, leading to a rejection of Christ. John 5:40 states that many will not come to Christ that they might have life. This unwillingness stems from a love for sin and self-righteousness, as fallen humanity gravitates towards temporary comfort found in religion rather than true salvation in Christ. Thus, even when confronted with their sinfulness, individuals often prefer to pursue man-made solutions instead of acknowledging their need for the Savior, who alone can redeem them from sin.
