Why do some claim God is the Father of everyone, and is this true?

Answered in 1 source

The claim that God is the Father of everyone disregards the biblical teaching that God is only the Father of those who recognize and accept Christ.

In the preaching of Christ, it is clear that not all are children of God in the spiritual sense. Jesus, in John 8, pointedly rebukes those who claim God as their Father simply based on their lineage or outward shows of religiosity. According to Scripture, God is the Father of those who are spiritually reborn through faith in Jesus Christ (John 1:12), rather than on mere ethnic or cultural identity. This understanding is critical as it shapes our view of authentic relationship with God, which is only possible through faith in Christ. Therefore, the assertion that God unconditionally accepts everyone fails to recognize the biblical prerequisites for being a child of God, which center on relationship through repentance and faith.
