Why do some confessions of sin appear insincere?

Answered in 1 source

Some confessions seem insincere when they are made to escape consequences rather than out of genuine remorse.

Confessions that lack sincerity often stem from motives such as fear, societal pressure, or a desire to manipulate circumstances. The preacher highlights examples such as Saul and Balaam, who confessed their sins when confronted but did not show genuine contrition or change of heart. Saul confessed out of fear of the people rather than a true acknowledgment of his disobedience to God. Insincere confessions typically do not lead to a transformation of life. In contrast, sincere confession acknowledges the depth of one’s sin and seeks genuine reconciliation with God, founded on a heart that understands the weight of sin and the need for divine mercy.
