Why do some find the gospel offensive?

Answered in 1 source

The gospel is offensive to some because it asserts that salvation is entirely a work of God's grace, not based on human effort.

Many find the gospel message offensive because it undermines the human inclination towards self-righteousness and merit-based salvation. The assertion that salvation is by grace alone (Ephesians 2:8-9) can be intolerable for those who believe they can earn favor with God through their actions or decisions. This offense often stems from a misunderstanding of one's spiritual condition, as highlighted by the biblical teaching that all are dead in their sins (Ephesians 2:1). The idea that God must intervene sovereignly to save a sinner challenges the notion of personal autonomy and fairness in the salvation process, which is why many prefer a gospel that allows room for personal input. Yet, for the believer, the grace of God as revealed in Christ's work is a liberating and joyous truth.
