Why do some people misunderstand the concept of grace?

Answered in 1 source

Many misunderstand grace by mixing it with works, thinking they must contribute to their salvation.

The misunderstanding of grace often arises when individuals attempt to reconcile their contributions with God's salvation. Grace, by definition, is unmerited favor, meaning it cannot be earned or supplemented by human effort. As Paul stated in Romans 11:6, if salvation is by grace, it is no longer based on works; otherwise, grace loses its meaning. Those who assert that one must 'do something' to be saved confuse the pure gospel of grace with a works-based salvation, which leads to a false sense of righteousness. This error reflects a lack of understanding that our righteousness is found solely in Christ's work, not in our own deeds.
