Why do we feel surprised by God's presence?

Answered in 1 source

Believers often underestimate God's power and ability, leading to surprise when He acts.

Surprise at God's actions often stems from our limited understanding of His greatness and our shallow experiences of Him. As seen in Isaiah 64:3, when God reveals Himself, it often surpasses our expectations. This surprise can lead to profound gratitude and recognition of God's grace. Furthermore, our expectation levels might not be commensurate with what God is capable of doing in our lives or the lives of others. Recognizing this aspect can spur us to pray earnestly for God's presence, anticipating with faith the powerful moves He can make, just as He did throughout biblical history.
