Why do we need to preach the bad news before the good news?

Answered in 1 source

Understanding the bad news of sin and judgment enhances the perceived value of the good news of salvation.

The sermon articulates that the preaching of the gospel should include both bad news and good news. The bad news consists of the reality of human sin and the impending judgment, making it clear that all have sinned and will face God's justice without repentance (Romans 3:23, Luke 13:3). This context is essential to appreciate the good news of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and the offer of grace. Without acknowledging the severity of sin, the message of Christ's atoning work may appear trivial. By teaching about judgment and the need for repentance, the gospel’s invitation to eternal life becomes far more urgent and meaningful, establishing a proper framework for understanding salvation.
