Why does God show mercy to His people?

Answered in 1 source

God shows mercy to His people because it is an expression of His sovereign will and loving nature.

God's mercy is not something that is earned but is a reflection of His character and sovereign will. As seen in 1 Peter 2:9-10, believers who were once not a people have now received mercy and been called by God as His own. This mercy is fundamentally unmerited and is a result of God's decision to choose and redeem His people through Christ. It is God’s delight to extend grace and compassion to those He has predestined for salvation, showcasing His unfathomable love and grace in action.
