Why does Jesus need to be both priest and sacrifice?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus embodies both priest and sacrifice to fully atone for human sin and to serve as the mediator between God and humanity.

Jesus needed to be both priest and sacrifice to ensure that the atonement for sin was complete and perfect. As the high priest, He represents humanity before God and offers the sacrifice; as the sacrifice, He bears the sin of humanity Himself. This dual role is significant because Old Testament sacrifices could only temporarily cover sin, whereas Jesus, being sinless, secures eternal redemption for believers (Hebrews 9:12). His sacrifice fulfills the Old Covenant requirements while establishing a New Covenant, where believers can rest in the assurance of their salvation, made possible through Christ's definitive offering of Himself (Hebrews 10:14). This dual role underscores the greatness of God’s plan to redeem His people through His Son.
