Why does Jonah's experience illustrate the need for divine mercy?

Answered in 1 source

Jonah's experience illustrates the necessity of divine mercy as he finds himself helpless and in need of salvation.

Jonah's story exemplifies the human condition in need of God's divine mercy. Cast into the depths, Jonah recognizes his utter helplessness and his inability to alter his predicament (Jonah 2:6). In this dire place, he learns that it is only by turning to the Lord that he can expect deliverance. His cry, 'Salvation is of the Lord', encapsulates the truth that true rescue must come from outside oneself. This narrative teaches believers that we, too, must rely solely on God's mercy for forgiveness and salvation rather than on our works or religious efforts. Jonah's deliverance also serves as a reminder that God's mercy extends even to the most undeserving.
