Why does self-righteousness lead to spiritual blindness?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness prevents genuine understanding and relationship with God.

Self-righteousness is a significant barrier to coming to faith in Christ, as exemplified by the Pharisees in John 9. Their reliance on their own righteousness and adherence to the law led them to reject Jesus, who challenged their understanding of God. This arrogance blinds them to their need for grace and the truth that they are not meant to rely on their works for salvation. The scripture teaches that acknowledging one's own blindness—as in recognizing one’s sinful state—is the first step toward receiving God’s grace. Thus, understanding our total dependence on Christ is essential for spiritual clarity.
