Why is apostasy such a serious sin?

Answered in 1 source

Apostasy is serious because it rejects the sufficiency of Christ and incurs the wrath of God.

Apostasy is grave because it involves not merely falling away in faith but actively rejecting the gospel of God's grace, which is foundational to salvation. The writer of Hebrews remarks in verse 27 that anyone who turns away can expect a fearful judgment. Since Christ is the only Savior, turning to other means, such as works or religious ceremonies, results in abandoning any hope of salvation. This rejection represents a profound contempt for the sacrifice of Jesus, as it counts His blood as common and worthless. Furthermore, apostasy demonstrates an insult to the Holy Spirit, who bears witness to Christ's sufficiency—therefore, it brings about severe consequences under God’s judgment.
