Why is baptism not the same as circumcision?

Answered in 1 source

Baptism and circumcision serve different symbolic purposes and are not directly connected in Scripture.

Baptism is distinct from circumcision as they signify different realities in the life of faith. While circumcision represented the covenant relationship between God and Israel, symbolizing inner regeneration, baptism publicly signifies a believer's faith in Christ and identification with His work. The Scripture makes it clear that while both practices involve a commitment to God, baptism is concerned with the believer's relationship to Christ rather than the covenant of the Old Testament. In Colossians 2:11-12, Paul indicates that while circumcision is of the heart, baptism is a confession of faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
