Why is being empty before God important?

Answered in 1 source

Being empty before God is important because it allows us to fully receive His grace and provision in our lives.

The requirement of emptiness is crucial in the context of God's grace. As illustrated in the account of the widow from 2 Kings 4, the only vessels that could be filled were those that were empty. This symbolism teaches that God can only fill those who recognize their need for Him, devoid of self-righteousness or false merit. Matthew 5:3 states, 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.' It emphasizes that acknowledgment of our spiritual bankruptcy is the pathway to true blessing and the reception of grace. When we come with empty hands, relying solely on Christ for our salvation and sustenance, we are positioned to be filled with the rich outpouring of His grace and love.
