Why is believing in Christ important for eternal life?

Answered in 1 source

Believing in Christ is crucial as He is the sole mediator for eternal life (John 14:6).

Belief in Christ is of paramount importance because, according to John 14:6, Jesus states, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.' This underscores that eternal life is only accessed through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Without faith in Him as the Savior, individuals remain under condemnation due to their sin. The sermon elucidates that our inability to save ourselves and the certainty of condemnation make Christ's redemptive work essential. His grace and mercy are the only means by which we can escape the wages of our sin, which is death (Romans 6:23).

Moreover, the sermon explains that while we are responsible for our rejection of God, God’s sovereign will is what determines who will receive eternal life. It is not just about mental assent to the facts of the Gospel but a transformative trust and reliance on Christ’s sufficiency. This is the heart of what it means to accept the gift of eternal life—the acknowledgment that apart from Christ, we are lost.
