Why is celibacy important for Christians?

Answered in 2 sources

Celibacy can be a gift that allows individuals to serve God without distraction, aligning their lives more closely with His purposes.

In Matthew 19, Jesus speaks of celibacy and suggests that it is a special calling for some people, specifically eunuchs who have chosen to remain celibate for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. This teaching highlights that celibacy can be seen as a divine gift, whereby individuals can dedicate their lives to serving God and advancing His kingdom. The Apostle Paul also addresses celibacy in 1 Corinthians 7, indicating that remaining unmarried allows one to focus on the things of the Lord, while marriage involves caring for a spouse and familial responsibilities. Thus, celibacy is viewed in the Reformed tradition not as a denial of human nature, but as a unique opportunity to live fully for Christ.
