Why is character important for church leaders?

Answered in 2 sources

A church leader's character is vital to their credibility and effectiveness in teaching sound doctrine and leading by example (Titus 1:6-8).

Character is of utmost importance for church leaders because they serve as models for the congregation. In Titus 1:6-8, Paul outlines the qualities that elders must possess, such as being blameless, just, sober, and holy. These attributes are crucial not only for personal integrity but also for maintaining the trust and respect of the church body. An elder whose life contradicts their teaching undermines the gospel and can lead others astray. Thus, a leader must not only be knowledgeable in the truth but also live in a manner that reflects Christ-like virtues, providing a credible witness to the faith they proclaim.
