Why is Christ called a stone of stumbling?

Answered in 1 source

Christ is referred to as a stone of stumbling because His message of grace offends those who rely on their own righteousness.

In Scripture, particularly in Isaiah 8:14, the Lord Jesus is depicted as a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. This imagery highlights the spiritual conflict that arises when individuals encounter the gospel of grace. For those who are proud and self-righteous, the proposition that salvation is solely through a crucified Redeemer is deeply offensive. They stumble over Christ because they fail to understand that their self-made righteousness cannot earn favor with God. Instead, believers find refuge and salvation in Christ, who becomes our sanctuary, while the unbelieving are ensnared by their own pride when confronted with the truth of the gospel.
