Why is Christ our great high priest important for salvation?

Christ's role as our great high priest is vital because He is the only one capable of offering a sacrifice that fully satisfies God's justice. Previous sacrifices, as performed by the Levitical priests, were merely shadows pointing to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. In Hebrews 9:26, we are taught that Christ appeared once to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. He fulfilled the requirements of the law not by offering another's blood but by offering His own. This one-time, fully adequate sacrifice guarantees that all believers can have their sins forgiven and stand clothed in Christ's righteousness.
