Why is Christ referred to as King in the context of His crucifixion?

Answered in 1 source

Christ is acknowledged as King even on the cross, demonstrating His sovereignty over salvation and His authority to grant eternal life.

In Luke 23:43, when Jesus said to the penitent thief, 'Today shalt thou be with me in paradise,' He affirmed His kingship and authority over eternal matters. This reinforces the biblical teaching of Christ as the King of Kings, as He sovereignly grants salvation even at the moment of death. His crucifixion did not diminish His royal status, but rather affirmed His right as King over life and death. Christ’s sovereignty assures believers that their salvation is secure, for He reigns victorious over sin, death, and the grave.
