Why is Christ's message considered offensive?

Answered in 1 source

Christ's message is considered offensive because it confronts human pride and declares the need for total dependence on God's grace for salvation (John 6:60-66).

The message of Christ is often found offensive because it challenges the inherent pride within humanity. When He spoke of being the 'bread of life' and implied that people must 'eat His flesh and drink His blood,' many were unable to grasp the spiritual truth behind His teaching, leading them to walk away offended (John 6:60-66). This response highlights the difficulty believers face when confronted with their inability to save themselves, an essential element of Christ's gospel. Salvation being by grace alone, through faith alone, and not by works, offends human sensibilities, which naturally believe in self-sufficiency and righteousness. Therefore, the very core of Christ's teaching, emphasizing God's sovereignty and human inability, often leads to rejection.
