Why is Christ's work essential for our righteousness?

The work of Christ is central to the Christian faith because it is through Him that we obtain true righteousness. Scripture teaches that our own efforts and works cannot achieve righteousness before God; instead, God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). This exchange illustrates that Christ's obedience and sacrifice are the foundation of our justification. It is only through the finished work of Christ that believers are declared righteous in God's sight, as His righteousness is imputed to those who believe.
