Why is confession important in prayer?

Answered in 2 sources

Confession is crucial in prayer as it acknowledges our sins and appeals for God’s mercy and forgiveness based on His righteousness.

The practice of confession in prayer is vital for authentic communication with God. In Daniel 9, Daniel confesses not only his own sins but also those of the Israelite people, illustrating the importance of recognizing our moral failures before a holy God. Confession allows believers to express their unworthiness and rely solely on God’s mercy. By laying bare our sins and taking responsibility for them, we position ourselves to receive God's forgiveness and grace. The understanding that our righteousness is as 'filthy rags' (Isaiah 64:6) strengthens our dependency on Christ's perfect righteousness through faith, underscoring that only through His sacrifice can we be justified before God.
