Why is conscience important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Conscience serves as an internal witness to God’s moral law, guiding believers toward righteousness.

Conscience is a vital component of the human experience and plays an essential role in spiritual life. In John 8:9, we see the accusers of the woman caught in adultery leave one by one, 'being convicted by their own conscience.' This illustrates that God has embedded a sense of right and wrong within each individual, which can lead to a sense of guilt when we transgress His moral law. For Christians, conscience should be informed and guided by the Holy Spirit and Scripture. While conscience can sometimes lead us astray if not aligned with God’s Word, it serves as a tool for conviction and prompting towards godly living. It is crucial for believers to cultivate a tender conscience and respond to its promptings to live in accordance with God’s will.
