Why is detraction considered a sin?

Answered in 1 source

Detraction is a violation of another's good name and is condemned as it undermines community and love.

Detraction is defined as unjustly damaging another person's reputation and is condemned in Scripture. It stems from malice and ill-will, leading to significant spiritual and social harm. According to the Bible, we are called to protect and love our neighbors, which includes safeguarding their reputations. Detraction, whether through whispering or backbiting, is not just a social faux pas but a sin against God, putting us in a position to rob others of the esteem they deserve. This creates division and fosters an environment of animosity and distrust within communities.
