Why is faith important in obtaining God's promised rest?

Answered in 1 source

Faith is crucial because it is the means through which believers enter into the rest and salvation promised by God.

Faith serves as the conduit through which God’s promises, including the promise of rest, are received and experienced. In Hebrews 4:2, it states that the word preached did not profit the disobedient because they did not mix it with faith. This illustrates that, to benefit from the promise of God's rest, one must actively believe in the truth of the gospel as it is revealed through Christ.

Moreover, faith is intrinsic to our understanding of God’s grace. It allows believers to cease from their own works, echoing God's rest upon completing creation. When we rely on Christ’s finished work rather than our efforts, we exemplify true faith, entering a spiritual state of rest that assures us of our salvation. This faith is not merely intellectual assent but involves a heartfelt trust in God's promises, aligning with the historical Reformed belief that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone, reinforcing the importance of this doctrine for Christians today.
