Why is fleeing to the altar important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Fleeing to the altar represents a believer's reliance on Christ for refuge and redemption from sin.

For Christians, the altar symbolizes the refuge found in Jesus Christ amid spiritual guilt and condemnation. Just as Joab sought mercy by taking hold of the horns of the altar, sinners are called to cling to Christ for salvation. This act of faith acknowledges His sacrifice as the means of justifying our standing before God. There is no other place of refuge; hence, true salvation lies in coming to Jesus and confessing our reliance upon Him as our sole means of redemption.
