Why is forgiveness important in Christian unity?

Answered in 1 source

Forgiveness is crucial in maintaining unity, reflecting Christ's own forgiveness of our sins.

Forgiveness is a cornerstone of Christian unity since it reflects the forgiveness that God extended to us through Christ. The Gospel teaches that we, who were enemies of God, have been reconciled to Him, and thus, we are called to forgive one another as an expression of that grace. Jesus emphasized the necessity of forgiveness when He taught that if we do not forgive others, we cannot expect to receive forgiveness ourselves (Matthew 6:14-15). This divine forgiveness should produce a heart posture that is ready to extend grace to others, especially within the body of Christ, where conflicts can arise. Embracing forgiveness fosters unity, combats resentment, and cultivates an environment where love thrives.
