Why is God's justice important in relation to mercy?

Answered in 1 source

God's justice ensures that mercy is meaningful, as true mercy is extended only after justice has been satisfied.

The relationship between God's justice and mercy is essential in Reformed theology. Justice demands that sin be dealt with appropriately, which God accomplishes through the sacrifice of Christ. Romans 3:26 explains that God is both just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. This means that God does not overlook sin; instead, He deals with it justly. By punishing sin in Christ, God provides a pathway for genuine mercy to be offered to sinners. Therefore, mercy, while free to the recipient, comes at the cost of satisfying divine justice, showcasing the depth of God's love and the seriousness of sin.
