Why is good works important in the Christian faith?

Answered in 1 source

Good works are essential as they demonstrate the reality of our faith in Christ and are the evidence of spiritual life.

In James 2:14-20, we see the vital relationship between faith and works. James teaches that a faith that does not produce good works is dead, as true faith expresses itself through love and practical actions. While we are justified before God solely by grace through faith, our works are the means by which we justify our faith before others. If our professed faith does not result in caring for the needs of our brethren or showing kindness and self-control, it is a mere empty profession. Thus, good works serve as validation of our salvation and are a necessary response to God's grace in our lives.
