Why is guarding the heart important?

Answered in 1 source

Guarding the heart is crucial because it determines the course of our lives and influences our speech (Proverbs 4:23).

The heart is seen as the seat of affections, desires, and motivations in Scripture. As Proverbs 4:23 admonishes, 'Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the springs of life.' The interconnectedness of our speech, thoughts, and actions means that a heart inclined toward good or evil will manifest itself in our conversations and behavior. In Psalm 141:4, David requests that God not incline his heart toward evil things, revealing a proactive desire to pursue righteousness and avoid temptation. Thus, the heart's condition directly directs the outputs of our lives, making its guarding essential to a godly life.
