Why is Holy Spirit conviction different from legal fear?

Answered in 1 source

Holy Spirit conviction involves a God-given faith that leads to true repentance, unlike legal fear which is merely an awareness of guilt.

Holy Spirit conviction is profound and life-changing; it is characterized by an increasing sense of guilt in light of God’s holiness and leads to lasting repentance. Unlike legal fear, which may arise from the terror of judgment without repentance, Holy Spirit conviction produces a desire for forgiveness and a relationship with Christ. This conviction comes from the revelation of Christ to us and leads to genuine faith. As described in Zechariah 12:10 and John 16:8-11, true conviction comes from the Holy Spirit revealing our need for salvation, thus transforming us from within and compelling us to fall upon Christ for mercy.
