Why is humility important for Christians concerning self-righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

Humility is crucial for Christians as it enables us to acknowledge our utter dependence on Christ for righteousness and avoids the pitfalls of self-righteousness.

Humility is the antidote to self-righteousness. When we recognize that we are poor in spirit and fully dependent on God's grace, we open ourselves to the transforming power of the Gospel. Self-righteousness, in contrast, fosters a spirit of independence and self-sufficiency, leading us to believe we can earn God’s favor through our actions. The Apostle Paul emphasizes that true righteousness is not from ourselves but through faith in Christ (Galatians 2:16). By cultivating humility, we allow God to work in us, reminding us that it is by His grace we are saved, regardless of our perceived holiness or good works.
