Why is it a sin to create our own idols?

Answered in 1 source

Creating idols misrepresents God and disrupts true worship.

Idolatry involves creating representations of God that distort His true character, thereby diminishing His majesty and holiness. In Exodus 20:4-5, God explicitly commands against making graven images, emphasizing that any attempt to replicate God or make Him relatable on human terms only serves to downplay His transcendent nature. The danger of idols lies not just in the physical objects, but in the attitudes they foster—distrust in God's sovereignty and an inclination to shape Him to fit personal desires. This is fundamentally opposed to true faith, which believes in the unseen, mighty God who reveals Himself through His Word.
