Why is it dangerous for Christians to return to a works-based righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

Returning to a works-based righteousness negates grace and leads to condemnation, as one cannot fulfill the law perfectly.

To revert to a works-based system of righteousness undermines the very essence of the gospel, which rests on grace. Galatians 5:4 warns that those seeking justification through the law fall from grace. The danger lies in the false notion that our good deeds can somehow outweigh our sins, which is a misunderstanding of our inherent sinful nature. The law, while revealing God’s standards, ultimately cannot save; it exposes our guilt and inadequacy. Instead of finding security in Christ, a works mentality fosters self-reliance and insecurity, leading back to bondage and fear.
