Why is it dangerous to add to the message of the gospel?

Answered in 1 source

Adding to the gospel undermines the sufficiency of Christ's work and can lead believers away from true faith (Galatians 4:17).

Adding any additional requirements or teachings to the gospel compromises its purity and undermines the sufficiency of Christ's redemptive work. Paul warns in Galatians 4:17 about the zeal of those who would distort the message of grace to serve their agendas. Such additions not only lead believers astray but also diminish the grace that is central to the gospel. A gospel that is countered by works or human effort fails to convey the essence of salvation by faith alone, placing believers at risk of relying on their performance rather than the finished work of Christ.
