Why is it dangerous to rely on personal merit for salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Relying on personal merit leads to spiritual pride and a false sense of security apart from the grace of God.

Throughout history, as illustrated in Romans 10:1-3, many have attempted to establish a righteousness of their own through works, neglecting God's standard of holiness and justice. This reliance on personal merit can result in spiritual blindness and a lack of understanding of true grace. Those who trust in their deeds rather than in Christ often miss the essence of the Gospel, which is that salvation stems solely from divine mercy and not human achievement. It's critical to recognize that our righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6), and the only hope for acceptance before God is through Christ's finished work.
