Why is it dangerous to rely on self-righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

Relying on self-righteousness leads to spiritual emptiness and a greater danger of being overtaken by evil.

In the sermon, it is emphasized that relying on self-righteousness ultimately results in an empty spiritual state. In Luke 11:24-26, when an unclean spirit is cast out, it wanders but eventually returns, finding the house swept and garnished but empty. This illustrates that simply trying to clean up one’s life without true regeneration leads to a haunting spiritual emptiness. Without the indwelling presence of Christ, one stands vulnerable to greater influences of sin and demonic powers. True righteousness is found only in Christ, who purifies the sinner deeply and permanently; any illusion of righteousness outside of Him risks a worse fate than before.
