Why is it dangerous to treasure earthly possessions?

Answered in 1 source

Treasuring earthly possessions can lead to greed and distraction from our relationship with God, as they are temporary and can bring spiritual harm (Matthew 6:19).

Matthew 6:19-20 warns against the accumulation of earthly treasures because these are subject to decay and can be stolen. The dangers lie in the temptation to place our security and identity in material wealth, which diverts us from our reliance on God. Jesus highlights that the love of money can hinder our spiritual growth and jealousy can lead to a restless heart. Therefore, the call is to focus on that which is imperishable, allowing us to cultivate a rich relationship with God rather than being ensnared by the fleeting pleasures of this world.
