Why is it essential for Christians to abandon self-righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

Abandoning self-righteousness is essential because it hinders our reliance on Christ, whom we must trust for true righteousness.

Self-righteousness stands in the way of true salvation because it presents a false hope that we can earn God’s favor through our own deeds. Romans 3:10 reminds us that there is none righteous, and thus, trusting in anything apart from Christ’s righteousness leads to spiritual bankruptcy. For true salvation and security, we must recognize our own unrighteousness and rely solely on Christ, who is our righteousness. This is illustrated in Isaiah where the downfall of Shebna (representing self-reliance) precedes the establishment of Eliakim (representing reliance on God’s provision). This underscores that true spiritual elevation comes only after we are humbled and brought low before God, necessitating a profound dependence on Christ's righteousness.
