Why is it important for Christians to avoid being self-righteous?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness blinds us to our own sinfulness and leads us to judge others instead of seeking humility.

The danger of self-righteousness for Christians is that it can create a skewed perception of one’s own spiritual health. The Pharisees, for example, thought themselves to be righteous, yet they missed the true essence of God's law by condemning others while justifying their own actions. This self-deception undermines the grace of God and fosters a judgmental spirit towards others. Instead, as Christians, we are called to humility, recognizing that our righteousness is found only in Christ and not in our own abilities or actions. This attitude of humility fosters love and grace in our interactions with others, encouraging a spirit of restoration rather than condemnation.
