Why is it important for Christians to avoid teachings that lead to self-righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

Avoiding self-righteousness is vital as it leads believers away from the grace of God and reliance on Christ alone.

In 1 Timothy 4, Paul warns against seducing spirits and false doctrines that promote self-righteousness and legalism, which appeal to the flesh rather than resting in Christ’s sufficiency. Such teachings can cause believers to trust in their own works for righteousness instead of relying solely on Christ’s sacrifice. The danger here is twofold: first, it undermines the doctrine of grace that proclaims salvation through faith alone, and second, it fosters a sense of spiritual pride among believers. By focusing on Christ and His righteousness, rather than our works or pious actions, we maintain our foundation in grace and avoid the pitfalls of self-righteousness.
