Why is it important for Christians to keep their hearts supplied with gospel motives?

Answered in 1 source

Keeping our hearts supplied with gospel motives is vital for resisting sin and living a life of obedience to God.

The heart must be actively nurtured with gospel motives to withstand the temptations of remaining sin. Proverbs 4:23 advises us to guard our hearts diligently because they influence our actions. A heart filled with legal motives, based on fear or obligation, falls short in fostering true devotion and presents barriers to spiritual growth. In contrast, gospel motives—rooted in the love of Christ and the recognition of His grace—empower believers to pursue righteousness joyfully. Hence, nurturing the heart with the realities of the gospel encourages a life that glorifies God, creating a disposition toward holiness rather than sin.
