Why is it important for Christians to prioritize Christ above family?

Answered in 1 source

Christ demands that He be the foremost priority over all familial and earthly attachments.

Jesus emphasizes that true discipleship demands that He be prioritized above all else, even family. In Matthew 8:21-22, a disciple asks to bury his father before following Jesus, but the Lord responds that he should let the dead bury their own dead. This seemingly harsh directive illustrates the urgency and supreme importance of the gospel mission over familial obligations. Jesus teaches us that everything must be surrendered for the sake of the kingdom of God, as seen in Matthew 10:37 where He states, 'Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.' This reinforces the notion that active loyalty to Christ is essential for genuine discipleship.
