Why is it important for Christians to understand the distinction between law and grace?

The distinction between law and grace is fundamental to a proper understanding of the Christian faith. The law, while good, reveals our sinfulness and inability to achieve righteousness through our own efforts (Romans 7:7). It does not provide a means of salvation but rather highlights our need for a Savior.
